The chili lunch fundraiser began in 2008 with a goal of 300 lunches, and over 400 were sold. In 2009 the goal was 600 lunches , and over 900 were sold . This year the goal is 1500 lunches. The chili is cooked and served from the Red Cross Office in Bristol. The lunch serves as a fundraiser, as well as a mass feeding exercise for Red Cross volunteers. The lunch gives valuable experience in mass feeding and delivery, as well as experience asking for food donations. These are things that would be necessary in an emergency that requires the sheltering and feeding of large numbers of people.
The Mountain Empire Chapter Of The American Red Cross does many valuable things in our community. Red Cross disaster services assists hundreds every year. In 2009, 144 families were
helped whose home had been damaged or destroyed by fire. Over $58,000 was used to assist these families with shelter, clothing , and food. When the winter storm hit in December of 2009,
Over 50,000 people were without power. The Red Cross was there assisting with 22 local shelters , serving nearly 10,000 warm meals and providing comfort kits to those affected by the outages. Chapter volunteers help the area to be prepared for disasters by planning and participating in emergency disaster drills and teaching CPR and first Aid to nearly 9,000 each year. You can also find them volunteering at community events such as NASCAR races and the Rhythm and Roots festival. The chapter also provides assistance for military families in times of crisis. In 2009, 514 individuals were assisted with military message service.
